Sprinkling bits of earth
Mahogany coffin gleams
Sunlight contemplates
My heated cheeks, icy eyes
Let his spirit find no peace
I’ve taken on another of Colleen’s Tanka Tuesday challenge. This week’s challenge was to write a Tanka poem (5/7/5/7/7) with the words ‘peace’ & ‘spirit’ in it. Conjures up holiday feels, right? So, naturally, I went a little dark.
Sinister! As always, you do a wonderful job of hinting at darker secrets. And that’s just the way I like it. π

Well done! I love the darkness and can see in my mind’s eye something sinister about to rise from that coffin! Woo hoo! I love the creepiness of your words. π β€

Ooh the depth of emotion in those few words! The passing of this should-have-been loving and loved one shows injustices unresolved. There’s no peace or forgiveness in the passing. Only the bitter taste of hate remains.
My interpretation took many more words than you did to write! You are the master!

Thank you! β€οΈ I’m not a poet so these tankas are way out of my comfort zone. Not sure I have it right yet but they’re fun to try. So happy those emotions came through. It’s what I was thinking when I wrote it. Unresolved injustices. No peace or forgiveness. (But I think others read it as her being the one who put him there. π I love all the ways people can interpret one piece.)

I’m pleased my interpretation was how you intended the piece to read. Perhaps that has more to do with me than with the piece when others have interpreted it differently. We all bring our own perspectives to what we read.
I’m very much enjoying your book “Hinting at Shadows”. I can read lots of stories in one sitting! π

Yes. “We all bring our own perspectives to what we read.” I love that! (And thank you so much for the comment. I’m thrilled you’re enjoying the book.) β€

This one has sass to it. I like it. I watched a scene from a TV show just last night and this poem fits it just perfectly.

Oh, cool! Which show? I liked this one, too, and have extended the story a bit. Still micro/flash but, eh, that’s what I like. π Thank you.

Pretty Little Liars :D. (Btw if you’ve seen that one, whatever you do, don’t tell me what happens!)
